New reviews of Hymns releases

http://startlingmoniker.wordpress.com/2009/12/09/reviews-for-12909/

Chefkirk & Ironing – “Notorious” – Hymns

Andrew Chadwick’s Hymns label is something of a staple ingredient for my broadcasts; his microcassette work and general enthusiasm for cut-up radio bacchanalia is always a joy to hear. This time around Ironing’s tapes get some no-input mixer and sampler material from Chefkirk to co-exist with, a combination that reminds me of Hollydrift’s radio/electronic drone experiments, but with less of a dark mood. The partnership also allows both a bit more ability to explore more nuanced sounds, from barely-there high end tones to drawn-out tape washes. Fans of Grundik Kasyansky’s “Light and Roundchair” will definitely dig this disc as well– although “Notorious” approaches these sounds from a very different angle, it is fascinating to see convergent ideas emerge.

Dubbio Nil

"Seed, Fruit, Thorn" 3" CDR

Hymns

Genre: experimental

Gainesville, FL

December 2009

This sixteen minute composition is rooted firmly in the ambient drone tradition, constructed largely around the sorts of expansive synth tones that get Steve Roach all itchy. Over the duration of Seed, Fruit, Thorn, Dubbio Nil's Loren Knack segues through several distinct timbres and textures, ranging from radiant keyboard drone to understated, pedal-based noise. Although confined to one audio track on the CDR, the piece is divided into three distinct parts -- strangely, these segments are not intended to represent the Seed, the Fruit, and the Thorn, but are instead organized according to some other, unspecified context. The first chapter is a resplendent, keyboard-based journey to the centre of the Sun, while the second is an unsettling bit of machinelike industrialism. But Knack retains the best moment for last -- the track's final section leads the listener into what sounds like a digital forest, with lugubrious synths and audio of rainfall providing a woods-like feel. Amid the unmistakably naturalistic sound, digital thunder claps add menace to the brew. Ultimately, it's a solid finish to a striking experimental release.

review of Dubbio Nil's "Seed, Fruit, Thorn" 3" in Auxiliary Out

from: http://auxiliaryout.blogspot.com/2009/08/dubbio-nil-seed-fruit-thorn-hymns.html

Dubbio Nil – Seed, Fruit, Thorn [Hymns]

I was surprised when I first put on this recent 3” from the Hymns label, because it didn’t have the “Hymns sound” I have come to expect, gnarled sourced material chewed up and spit out by a couple hundred broken fuzzboxes and broken radios.
Instead, from the get go, this Dubbio Nil stuff is unwaveringly beautiful. Incredibly lush synth strings sounding like some kind of astral choir. I suggest cranking it up and letting the sound envelope you. The piece moves fluidly, subtly changing through this first section until a repetitive guitar figure replaces the synth pads briefly before it succumbs to the stranglehold of some reverbed, manipulated sounds. The fields of everlasting light and splendor at the start of the track are now forgotten in this dank cavern. The subsequent section balances those two ideas; the synth returns but there is an ominous feel. It sounds more resigned than reveled. Shards of static scratch along while the synth shrivels into a field recording of storm, which itself shrivels into silence.
It is quite a well made piece, it moves pretty effortlessly through all its changes though it’s the first section that I’m really smitten by. The 3” cd-r is packaged in the stark, signature Hymns art work and as a cool little bonus it comes with a seed and planting instructions. I got a Poncirus Trifoliata. Pretty sweet.

Ironing "Nassau" reviewed in Foxy Digitalis

from http://www.digitalisindustries.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=4672

Ironing "Nassau"

This is one interesting record. “Nassau” is composed of microcassette recordings from a cruise that Andrew Chadwick (the man behind the Ironing moniker) took to Nassau, mixed with live Bahamian radio. The recordings were assembled and mastered in late 2005, so it's strange that this CD-R took so long to release.

There are over thirty tracks on this release, and it clocks in at over 74 minutes long – a little too long than the contents deserve. The music comes across as noisy channel surfing, interspersed with foghorns and a variety of other mysterious sounds. It's interesting, reminding me of the tape splice exercises of Gastric Female Reflex or even the damaged sample-ridden pop of Eric Copeland. It's just too damn long, however! I have recently become enamored of Caribbean rhythms, and “Nassau” is obviously chock full of them. I just wish some more editing were done to shorten the overall length of the record, if only to preserve the sense of novelty. 6/10 -- Bryon Hayes (4 August, 2009)

Dubbio Nil review in Digitalis

from http://www.digitalisindustries.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=4406

Dubbio Nil "Seed, Fruit, Thorn"

I can't speak for what package you may get, but my copy of Dubbio Nil's new CDR featured a seed called Poncirus Trifoliata. A seed that, once planted and cared for, will sprout the Japanese Bitter Orange tree. It's a shrub armed with vicious spines that also blooms an orange that is too bitter to eat.

An aggressive plant for an otherwise palatable release. Dubbio Nil's single track stretches over 16 minutes and leans from drone synth work, slow fingerpicked guitar, lots of open spaces, what sounds like the sound of water back to more synths.

There is a natural tension that arises in the pieces and in between the pieces, a slow but steady build that smells of heavenly bliss. There is no fault in the execution, but also very little to grab onto or stand out. The transations in the beginning are a little abrupt, but they really get into a groove past the halfway mark and especially towards the final four minutes, where the water sound merges with synths and a smidge of dissonance and make for a surrounding sound that ends the disc very strongly. 6/10 -- Andrew Murdock Livingston (16 June, 2009)

The Cult Of Done

This has been posted around the internet for a couple months now. I was reminded of it today (thanks, Ian) and thought I should share it for those who haven't already seen it.

I don't agree with all of the points, but it's a good start! At least they got it done! Here's to crossing things off to-do lists!

from: http://www.brepettis.com/blog/2009/3/3/the-cult-of-done-manifesto.html

Dear Members of the Cult of Done,

I [Bre Pettis] present to you a manifesto of done. This was written in collaboration with Kio Stark in 20 minutes because we only had 20 minutes to get it done.

The Cult of Done Manifesto

  1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
  2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
  3. There is no editing stage.
  4. Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you're doing even if you don't and do it.
  5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
  6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
  7. Once you're done you can throw it away.
  8. Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done.
  9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
  10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
  11. Destruction is a variant of done.
  12. If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
  13. Done is the engine of more.

c-c and friends get reviewed

Some recent releases were reviewed by the blog of platinum content, Blibdoolpoolp, including the new Realicide monster of an album, Often, Ultra//Vires, and c-c. Below is the c-c review, taken from here: http://blibdoolpoolp.blogspot.com/2009/05/my-friends-are-best-ones.html

c-c - Muse Ick Fact or Y? (.x., ......)

You think you are equipped to tussle with the big poobah of Columbian Gabber? Well, that is one sentiment with which I cannot agree. The first song beam into your brains the entire sordid history of Dade County's lowest frequencies, then the second one serves you opiated lemonade. By round three, you are making the conga on a television cruise ship, when your tropical vacation is interrupted by marauding rap bandits. Shanghaied away to a Rio de Janeiro rave party, you are hypnotized by a trillion favela ass cheeks. A dapper jeweler offers you ice cream. The streets are swept to the tune of yr drunk uncle's organ playing. WHAT A COMMOTION!!!

Age 35

A fun project with easy rules: All ya gotta do is draw someone or something at age 35! The only two rules are that you write "Age 35" and the name of your subject on your piece. You've got it!

Dubbio Nil review in Startling Moniker

from: http://startlingmoniker.wordpress.com/2009/05/02/im-planting-things-today/

I really dig Dubbio Nil’s newest mini-cdr for the Hymns label, “Seed, Fruit, Thorn.” As you may recall, I like ambient music that isn’t boring. In fact, I’m incredibly picky about it. If I didn’t like Brian Eno so much, I’d even say I dislike ambient music– which is why I’d rather say that this little 16-minute wonder is “quietly active” than ambient. It doesn’t hold my attention, but it does require it. Do you understand the difference?

My copy came with a Poncirus trifoliata seed, not exactly the most friendly plant. Known for possessing rather nasty hook-shaped thorns, I imagine it will also require more than a little of my attention! Here are two Dubbio Nil videos to keep you busy until your copy arrives in the mail:

Dubbio Nil & Bearses reviews

A couple new reviews of recent releases on my microlabel, Hymns:

From
Auxiliary Out:

Bearses – The Prettiest Girl I Ever Saw [Hymns]
Not sure if this band’s name is pronounced like “bare-zees” or “bee-arses” but that’s beside the point. This 3incher, from Florida label Hymns, is a crumpled up mass of static spread across five tracks. There are samples of stuff buried deep down but they’re mangled beyond recognition by incredibly thick, saturated distortion and pitch shifting. Near the send of the first track a bit of carribean dance/pop stuff (maybe?) is barely audible through the muck leading into flashes of slowed radio DJ babble, heavily rhythmic crunching distortion and garbled vocal tones in the second piece. It’s nice having bands like Bearses to remind us just how much a fuck-ton of fuzz can morph one sound into something entirely different——namely magnanimously crusty squalls. The third track brings up the curtain a bit letting shards of distortion interact with the source material (a slowed down, rambling folk tune) instead of smothering it. It’s a well-placed melodic break in the middle of the record. The fourth track is interesting as well. There’s plenty of distortion but bits and pieces of gongs, bells and ethnic percussion poke through at certain intervals. The fifth track uses a lot hi-pitched freakouts amongst sloshed zombie slurs——a nice little kick in the teeth to remember them by.

For people, like me, who keep the radio dial placed equidistantly between stations or for fans of listening to records at the wrong speed played through twelve Metal Zones.

From Vital Weekly #673:

DUBBIO NIL - SEED, FRUIT, THORN (3"CDR by Hymns)
Along with this release comes a small plastic bag with a seed in it and there is a small text on the cover about grass, explaining (?) the title, and the webaddress of the band, but that website is hardly a place for extensive researching. So whatever he or she does, its about organic matter, I'd say. Producing sound with perhaps organic matter, being transformed through some sound effects, or perhaps even on a computer - its a bit hard to tell here. Its one piece that lasts about sixteen minutes and its not bad at all. It sort of reminded me of early Small Cruel Party or Yeast Culture - although: who'd be remembering that after all those years? Drone like, mysterious, vague, but also quite nice to hear. It leaves lots of room to think and interpretate things your way. Sometimes that's nice enough. A small gemm this one. (FdW)

Dubbio Nil made a lovely video for the first portion of his track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W_55dJ0zzE

Slaughterin' Slobbersville

I will be venturing overseas to Europe this week to take part in Slaughterin' Slobbersville, a vaudeville styled tour based on the theme of "Traveling side show re-enactments of the Genetic Mutant Civil War of 2024." I'll be joining a whole crew of talented people in a van for two and a half weeks as we travel to the following places:

  • 25 April Leipzig, Germany - Skala Leipzig
  • 28 April Munich, Germany - Lothringer 13
  • 30 April Krems, Austria - Donau Festival
  • 01 May Rotterdam - the WORM
  • 02 May Hasselt, Belgium - Kunstencentrum
  • 03 May Hamburg, Germany - Golden Pudel
  • 04 May Amsterdam, Netherlands - OCCII
  • 05 May TBC
  • 06 May Brussels - L’Ecurie
  • 07 May Wetzlar, Germany - Franzis
  • 08 May TBC
  • 09 May Utrecht - Vecht Club

Kevin Blechdom, Irene Moon and others have poured a lot of hard work into making this happen. There will be a lot more hard work and fun to come! If you're anywhere nearby these shows please come out and say hello. It should be quite an interesting show.
